About the connection between Parashat Shlach Lecha and the English Language

This parasha starts with the words: שלח לך אנשים לטור את הארץ. So, Moshe sends out the spies to travel the Land of Israel and tells them to go sightseeing. No wonder we have in the English language a word for people who do this: TOURists.

Did you know there is an etymological connection between tour and turn? Both come from the 1300s Old French Tor, meaning to turn from tourner.

And that’s what the spies in this parasha did: Taking a turn in the country.
